In Episode 1, I mention about a business seminar Curixs and I attended. It doesn’t teach us a lot of new things, but we are grateful that the seminar remind us about a lot of things that we already know. However, that doesn’t stop me from being in disagreement with the speaker.

“I’m a marketer” I make money selling things. Cross sell, up sell, try to monetize everything.

This is what they say the attitude of most of the richest businesspeople. They even add, don’t care how long the product appeal in the market. You innovate, and make as much money as you can while you can.

Jokes. Being in business is not about how much money that you can make. It’s about passion and satisfaction. Truth is, money only count when you doesn’t have it. But, when you have some to spare, others matter.

No, I’m not preaching about some moral responsibilities here. I want us to realign our objectives. Profit is important, but how we get it, it is more important. Don’t always opt for the easiest and the fastest.

As a beginner, we have the best opportunity to build our business on a strong foundation. We should offer personalized and efficient service to our earliest customer. Have frequent a Mamak joint? Ever wonder how they can recognize their customer by their first name? Ever notice how many new branches they open in recent years? And finally, ever thought how much they earn?

Often I thought, the mamak only recognize their “deep pocketed” preferred customer. But, I was wrong. When I was just 12, I frequent this particular mamak restaurant, every weekend for my lunch before going to tuition. And as time pass, my routine changed as I moved all over the country to further my studies. I no longer go to this mamak restaurant, but once in a while, during holidays when I drop by, he (and some of his older staffs) still remember me and my favourite order. Teh o’ Ais and Tosai. No wonder, when A&W, Marrybrown are closing their outlet one by one in Kuantan, this mamak has slowly but surely opened new restaurants. 4 at last count. Heck, even McD only have 3!

Hehe, yes. The foods are good too. That’s one of the factor that contribute to their popularity. But,IMHO it is their “branding” that sustain and expand that popularity.
